First Baptist is partnering with Greensboro Urban Ministry to serve as a site for Winter Emergency Housing through March 2025.

Amidst pronounced needs in our community, Greensboro Urban Ministry initiated discussions with local congregations about the possibility of providing Winter Emergency Shelter as overflow for GUM’s Weaver House. First Baptist is joining with First Presbyterian Church, West Market United Methodist Church, and Grace Community Church to provide a total of 57 beds. First Baptist will provide 15 beds for single women.

First Baptist served as a Winter Emergency site over a decade ago, utilizing the Adams Street House. We also supported the WE Shelter site of New Jerusalem Church as a primary partner prior to COVID. During COVID, we served as the site for the IRC White Flag Shelter on nights that the temperature dropped below 32 degrees.

We are grateful for the opportunity to provide hospitality to our neighbors. As we respond as we can to this urgent need, we are also committed to the ongoing work to address root causes of poverty and housing instability in our community. To learn more, see a project description and FAQ sheet here.

Our most pressing need is volunteers to bring prepared meals each night. You may consider signing up as a Sunday School class, with other families, or friends outside our congregation, or commit to providing a meal on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
