With the conclusion of Doug and Terri Vancil’s tenure at First Baptist Greensboro and the celebration of the ministry shared with them, our church now begins a process of planning for the future of our Music Ministry. As a first step, we are excited to announce the hiring of an Interim Minister of Music: Rev. K. Seth Hix.

Seth is our friend and fellow member of First Baptist Greensboro, where he has also been choir member, Sunday School teacher, and recent Deacon Chair. In his professional life, he has most recently worked as a consultant for churches in transition, through his work with Center for Healthy Churches, and previously with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina. One of his areas of expertise is music ministry transition. This is, in part, due to his own extensive experience in music ministry.

Prior to completing the MDiv at Wake Forest in 2017, Seth received a Bachelor of Music in Church Music (2000) and a Master of Music in Church Music (2002) from Samford University, where he studied with the preeminent Baptist church musician, Dr. Milburn Price. Seth served as Minister of Music at North Riverside Baptist Church in Newport News, VA (2003-2007) before becoming the Minister of Music at Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington, KY from 2007-2014. A 1,000 member CBF congregation with a comprehensive music program, Calvary’s music ministry bears many similarities to our own at First Baptist Greensboro.

With his combination of skills, gifts and experience, Seth is a go-to resource for churches experiencing transition in music ministry. We are grateful First Baptist could turn to him, too. After resigning as current Deacon Chair, Seth was hired on Monday, February 13, as the Deacons enthusiastically affirmed the recommendation of the Personnel Committee and Pastor Alan Sherouse. Maintaining his freelance work with Center for Healthy Churches, Seth will work for First Baptist part-time, focusing on choral direction and worship leadership. We are also actively searching for a primary service musician and accompanist for this interim period.

We are grateful for Seth’s leadership and commitment, which are yet another reminder of the abundant gifts of God in times of need. Your gifts are part of that, too. Thank you for your continued faithfulness as we move forward in faith and hope.

Special thanks to members of our Personnel Committee: Kelly Cornett, Will Crawford, Scott Culclasure (Chair), Debbie Garner, Suzanne Rohrbaugh and David Rowe.
