Christina McCord

Christina McCord

Minister to Children and Families

Christina is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in Elementary Education. She has been serving and leading in churches throughout her career and joined the staff at First Baptist in August 2015. She has the privilege of helping to form children, birth to 5th grade, spiritually. She works alongside families of all shapes and sizes as they strive to teach their children about faith. She can be found creating spaces and opportunities for children to learn about the amazing love of God and inviting them to live out their lives as Jesus did. She sees missions’ education and application as a vital part of the children’s ministry at First Baptist. Christina is married to Jason and has two sons, Grant and Jake. She can generally be found hanging out with her family and loves that there is never a dull moment. Christina is grateful that the children and families at First Baptist are always willing to try something new, as she often likes to think “out of the box.” She loves the people, both in the congregation and on the staff. Christina is fun, energetic, creative and vulnerable. She is sure to bring light to any room.

Alan Sherouse

Alan Sherouse

Senior Pastor

Alan has been our Senior Pastor since September 2013. Before coming to First Baptist Greensboro, he served as pastor at Metro Baptist Church in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan — his first pastorate, where many of his convictions about church, community ministry and advocacy were formed. Alan is a graduate Palm Beach Atlantic University (BA in Religion, 2002), Wake Forest University Divinity School (M Div) and Vanderbilt University (MA). He is married to Jenny Sherouse, and they are the parents of Jack, Della, Warner and Bea (In the words of his favorite comedian Jim Gaffigan, “4 kids?! Just imagine you’re drowning and someone hands you a baby!”).

In thinking of what he loves about First Baptist Greensboro, Alan says, “During our baby dedications, as the child and I walk amidst the congregation, often one of our older saints reaches into the aisle to lay a hand on the baby in prayer. That moment might be the single thing I love most — the hope and the heritage of this community, and the grace of God that finds us all in between.”

When not at church, Alan can most likely be found spending time with his family, or meeting with church members or community partners in a “mobile office” in local spots. Alan is passionate about First Baptist Greensboro’s place as a leader in the wider community, and devotes time to service in community and denominational life, including currently serving on the Governing Board of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and staying involved at his Alma mater, Wake Forest University Divinity School, where he has taught classes and is co-convener of the new Baptist Commons initiative.

He received his Bachelor of Music Education from Murray State University and a Master of Church Music from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Doug is involved in the planning of worship and he directs those who participate in the musical aspects of the worship service. If he is not worship planning, you can find him outside or playing with his three grandchildren. Doug is married to Terri and they have three adult children, two who are also serving in music ministry and one who is a mechanic. Doug loves that the choirs of First Baptist are willing to be challenged musically and that he is able to share the faith journey with all ages in every stage of life. Terri joined the staff alongside her husband, Doug, the Associate Pastor of Music and Worship in 1999. Terri has a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from Murray State University and a Master of Music in choral conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. At First Baptist Terri leads worship and congregational singing, directs and accompanies choirs and ensembles, and coordinates children’s and handbell choirs. When she is not at the church, Terri is embracing her new role as “Grand Mom” to Samuel, Emma Frances and Selah. She loves working with choirs of all ages at First Baptist and finds great joy in common music rehearsals transformed to holy moments of spiritual worship. Courtney Willis

Courtney Willis

Associate Pastor of Faith Formation & Congregational Life

Courtney actually began working with First Baptist long before she was called to serve on staff part-time in March of 2018. She is a graduate of Elon University and later Princeton Theological Seminary. In her role she is primarily responsible for adult education opportunities at the Midweek gathering on Wednesday nights. She is also always on the lookout for creative opportunities to engage the church at large in spiritual growth throughout the church year. She and her husband Stephen were married in 2004 and they have one son, Berkley. As a family, they enjoy traveling and experiencing other cultures. They love the outdoors and finding adventure together. When not at the church, Courtney can be found reading, dancing, hiking, paddle boarding, or traveling and squeezes every ounce out of vacation. She loves that First Baptist is a church that is both steeped in tradition, but also willing to stretch, grow and try new things. She knows it is a rare combination and believes it is what keeps the church healthy and vibrant. Courtney is intentional, compassionate and thoughtful. She believes in holding the tension of holy tears with laughter and welcomes it with a gracious spirit.
