FBC is partnering with New Jerusalem Cathedral, Greensboro Urban Ministry and other congregations to sponsor a Winter Emergency! shelter for homeless women in our community. Our shelter serves up to 20 women each night. Open from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 a.m., the shelter provides a hot evening meal, showers, sleeping facilities and food for the next day. Secure parking is available beside the building.

Supporting the Ministry:
FBC provides volunteers and food for the residents on Monday evenings through the end of March. There are many ways to support the ministry, including:

  • Praying for women, the staff and the volunteers
  • Volunteering to be a Check-in/Greeter, be a Dinner host, provide Breakfast/lunch bags, or serve as a Hospitality Volunteer
  • Leading a special activity
  • Donating supplies and other financial support

Morning Drivers
Our FBC bus is being used to transport the women from the shelter to downtown. We need volunteers to drive the bus to the shelter, pick up the women, drive them to Greensboro Urban Ministry on Eugene Street and return the van and key to the church. No special driver’s license is required. The complete time to volunteer as a driver is from 7:00 a.m. until approximately 7:45 a.m. Contact Gayle Wiley, 336.852.2768, or sign up online if you are interested in being a driver for the shelter.

Volunteer Training
Training is provided for volunteers. Updates on training opportunities will be provided through Connections.

Shelter Dinner Menus:
We do NOT have set menus for the shelter dinners. If you would like some ideas or recipes that include quantities for 25–30 people, click here.

Donations
:
Periodically, the shelter is in need of donations, such as personal hygiene supplies, laundry supplies, etc. Look for updates through Connections or the New Jerusalem Cathedral Facebook site for updates on supply needs. Drop off supply donations in the WE! Shelter box located in the FBC atrium.

Criminal Background Check:
Volunteers who serve in the Greeter and Hospitality roles need to fill out an application and obtain a background check (if not within the three years) through FBC. Such a check is a prerequisite for many FBC activities involving children as well. Click here AND e-mail Catherine Scott-Little to indicate that you have applied.
